Our maternity service

If you’re thinking about having your baby at The Bays, know you’re in safe hands. You and your baby are supported by an experienced team of midwives and doctors that deliver 500 babies a year.

We’ve been helping families grow for over 80 years, and we want The Bays to feel like an extension of your home, and our team to feel like family.

We understand that bringing a new life into the world is a deeply personal experience, and our Maternity Unit is dedicated to providing you with a warm, safe, and supportive environment during this special time. Our goal is to make you feel at home, with high-quality care tailored to your needs and preferences.

It can be daunting trying to decide which hospital to give birth, especially if this is your first pregnancy. To help, here are few things that Bays babies and their families enjoy about their experience with us:

  • Continuity of care – Choose your own obstetrician who will be there for you throughout your pregnancy, birth and beyond. Find your obstetrician.
  • Comfort and privacy during your stay – A private room designed for comfort, where you can recover and get to know your newest addition
  • Partners can stay overnight – we know how important it is to have your partner stay with you in those precious early days
  • Spacious birthing suites – each featuring a private ensuite and deep bath
  • A team by your side – working alongside your chosen obstetrician, our team of midwives, nurses, paediatricians and anaesthetists will provide expert care for you and your baby
  • Modern facilities – be cared for in our modern birth suites, postnatal ward and Special Care Nursery, featuring the latest equipment and in close proximity to operating theatres and our High Dependency Unit for any advanced care requirements
  • A-la-carte dining – we have a great reputation for serving delicious, fresh food and restaurant-quality meals prepared on-site daily by our team of dedicated chefs
  • Expert breastfeeding support – our lactation consultants will help you navigate this important milestone
  • Prenatal education – to help you feel prepared and confident as you approach childbirth
  • Ongoing post-natal parenting support – to ensure you and your baby have everything you need after birth and help you navigate those early days
  • Convenient access to pathology and radiology services – all in one place for your ease and convenience

We’re here to support you every step of the way, ensuring your journey into parenthood is as positive, comfortable, and empowering as possible.

Tour our maternity unit

We hold maternity tours every Sunday from 3.30pm.

To book your place, email maternity@thebays.com.au.

Maternity visiting hours

We offer flexible visiting hours for patients, but also try to keep the maternity unit as quiet as possible to allow new mums sufficient time to rest.

Children visiting should be supervised by an adult at all times for their own safety and that of other visitors, staff and patients.

You have the right to refuse to see any visitor and this will be supported by our midwifery staff.

Breastfeeding and baby bonding support

At The Bays Hospital, we understand how important the early days are for both you and your baby. That’s why we offer dedicated support to help foster a strong bond between you and your newborn, while providing guidance on breastfeeding.

Our experienced staff will ensure you have all the information you need to make the best feeding decisions for your baby. Whether you choose to breastfeed or opt for formula feeding, we are here to support you every step of the way. We focus on your baby’s health and your experience, providing practical advice, encouragement, and hands-on help as you navigate these early moments together.

We’re proud to be the only private hospital in Victoria accredited by the World Health Organization’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). This prestigious accreditation recognises our commitment to promoting and supporting breastfeeding through evidence-based practices that protect and nurture both mother and baby.

At our hospital, you’ll find the resources, expertise, and support you need to ensure a positive, fulfilling start to your parenting journey.
