We have just renewed our contract with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), which means our Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses, Meredith and Ying will continue to support local men with prostate cancer for the next 3 years.
Meredith and Ying support men who live in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula area, regardless of whether they receive cancer treatment at The Bays, enabling us to support even more local people with cancer. One third of their current patients are public patients.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and is a timely reminder to have important conversations about men’s health. If you are a male, aged 50 or over, there is a strong possibility that you, or one of your mates, has or will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and the second most common cause of death from cancer in Australian men. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data shows deaths from prostate cancer have risen by around 30 per cent since 2007, with more than 3900 men estimated to die from this disease in 2024 – that’s over 11 men a day.
However, early detection and treatment can be lifesaving and significantly improve prostate cancer outcomes. A simple blood test (prostate-specific antigen test) is recommended for all men over the age of 50 and for age 40 for men with a family history of prostate cancer.
