Dialysis Nurse Unit Manager, Leanne Waterson recently attended the 2025 Renal Society of Australasia (RSA) Conference in Brisbane, thanks to a scholarship from The Bays Nurse and Midwifery Education Fund, made possible by the generous support of founding partner, Rotary Mornington.

The 3-day event brought together renal health professionals from across Australia and New Zealand to explore emerging trends in kidney care, workforce challenges, and patient-centred innovations.

For Leanne, the experience was both professionally enriching and personally moving.

“It was so inspiring to hear firsthand from patients, clinicians and researchers who are all deeply committed to improving outcomes in renal care,” she said.

“I came away with new ideas, fresh perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the work we do every day.”

Among her key takeaways were:

  • innovations in dialysis care, including new access devices and more personalised treatment options
  • the growing focus on mental health and pain management as part of holistic patient care
  • a powerful keynote from patient advocate Miguel Lopez, who shared his lived experience with kidney disease and three transplants

Leanne is now sharing her learnings with the wider team at The Bays, helping to translate leading-edge knowledge into even better care for our local community.

“I’m so grateful to the Education Fund for the opportunity – it’s made a lasting impact on me and, I hope, on our patients too.”
