For Kirby Smith and her family, The Bays holds a very special place in their hearts. It is where Kirby works as The Bays’ Infection Control Coordinator – and where she welcomed both of her daughters, Keira and Hannah, into the world.
Keira was born at The Bays in 2021, followed four years later by her little sister Hannah in 2025. For Kirby, having both of her daughters born at the hospital where she works has created a special connection between her professional and personal lives.
The Maternity Unit holds particularly fond memories for Kirby and her family, and when Hannah celebrated her first birthday, they returned to The Bays to mark the occasion in a meaningful way.
They purchased a heart for The Bays’ Giving Tree, with both Hannah and Keira’s names engraved on it – a lasting tribute to the two girls whose lives began here, and a way for their family to give back to the Maternity Unit.
“We returned to The Bays on Hannah’s first birthday to add our family’s heart to the Giving Tree,” Kirby said.
“The maternity unit holds a special place in our hearts, and we wanted to give back and support future families and babies. We hope our donation helps them experience the same wonderful care and support we received when we were here for both our girls.
“A big thank you to all the amazing staff who cared for us.”
The heart bearing Keira and Hannah’s names is now part of The Bays’ Giving Tree – a beautiful reminder of two very special girls and the hospital that has been part of their family’s story from the very beginning.
For Kirby, it is also a heartfelt way to acknowledge the Maternity Unit team who cared for her family, while helping future parents and babies experience the same wonderful support.
