Leaving hospital
Planning your discharge from hospital
When you’re ready to go home
- Your doctor will visit you to confirm you’re ready for discharge.
- You’ll receive written instructions about your post-operative care, including any:
- Medications
- Follow-up appointments
- Ongoing services (e.g., home nursing)
It’s important to follow these instructions carefully once you’re home.
Discharge time
- Standard discharge is at 9.30am.
- Let a nurse or ward clerk know when you’re ready—someone will escort you to reception.
Before you leave the hospital
Make sure to:
- Arrange transport home and ensure someone stays with you for the rest of the day and overnight
- Collect all medications, x-rays/scans, and any written post-care instructions
- Pack your bag and check your room carefully for personal items
