Giving back to a hospital that means so much

For Amy and Michael Johnson, The Bays has been part of their family’s story from the very beginning.

Amy first connected with The Bays in 2012 through her work as a contractor, servicing and repairing the hospital’s automatic doors. Over the years, she developed a strong connection to the people and place.

So when the couple were expecting their first daughter, Millie, in 2022, there was no question about where they wanted to welcome her into the world.

Millie arrived early at 35 weeks and two days and spent her first four days in the Special Care Nursery. With Dr Sarah Roberts delivering Millie, Amy and Michael spent eight days at The Bays altogether.

“It was an incredibly emotional and uncertain time, but we always felt supported, cared for and respected,” Amy said. “The staff and midwives were incredible. They were constantly checking in on us, making sure we were okay and that we had everything we needed.”

When their second daughter, Mia, arrived, returning to The Bays was an easy decision. Delivered by Dr Amy Swanson, Mia was welcomed into the same supportive environment that had meant so much to the family with Millie.

Wanting to give back, Amy and Michael purchased leaves on The Bays’ Giving Tree in honour of their daughters.

“For us, it felt like a meaningful way to give something back to the hospital that has given our family so much,” Amy said.

“The Bays will always hold a very special place in our hearts. We are incredibly grateful to all the amazing staff who have cared for us and our girls.”
