At The Bays, some of the most powerful stories are the ones that span decades – stories of deep connection, selfless service, and lasting impact. Two people who embody this spirit are Gael Traa and Carol Allen: long-time friends, Rotarians, and much-loved members of The Bays family – who continue to enrich our community in a vibrant new way.
Together, Gael and Carol have contributed to The Bays in many ways over the years. Gael, a former emergency nurse and senior aged care executive, once led The Bays Aged Care home in Hastings before joining the Board. Carol, a passionate community advocate, also served on The Bays Healthcare Group Board and now contributes to the aged care home through Apollo Care. Both women have helped shape the caring culture that defines us.
Now, in retirement, Gael and Carol are giving back in a new and inspiring way – through art.
As part of our ArtCare Program, they are sharing their creative talents to help transform our hospital corridor into a vibrant, welcoming environment. The program invites local artists to exhibit their work throughout The Bays, offering patients, visitors, and staff a sense of warmth, joy, and reflection. Even better, 20 per cent of all art sales directly support The Bays, creating a ripple effect of generosity.
Carol’s art is inspired by the natural beauty of Mount Eliza – featuring serene landscapes, florals and mosaics that reflect life’s quiet, meaningful moments. “I paint purely for the love of it,” she says. “It brings me mindfulness, joy, and a way to stay connected to what matters most.”
Gael’s large-format acrylics are bold and abstract, filled with colour, energy and emotion. For her, painting has become a deeply personal way to continue caring for others. “After decades in nursing and aged care, art has become my new way of giving – bringing beauty and comfort to people in a different, but still meaningful, way.”
We are honoured to have these two incredible women continue their journey with us through ArtCare. Their contributions – past and present – help shape not only the halls of our hospital, but also the heart of our community.
