Dr Ali Eqbal

Gastroenterologist

Dr Ali Eqbal is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, with subspecialty expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and advanced colonic polyp diagnosis and resection. He has completed three years of further fellowship training following specialist qualification. This included advanced IBD training at the renowned Austin Hospital IBD Unit in Melbourne, where he developed comprehensive skills in managing complex Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

He then undertook two years of intensive training in advanced endoscopy at King’s College Hospital, London, within the internationally recognised SPECC (Specialist Polyp and Early Colorectal Cancer) team. Here, he gained highly specialised experience in complex endoscopic resection techniques, including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and early colorectal cancer management.

These fellowships are complementary. Patients with IBD are at increased risk of developing colonic polyps and colorectal cancer, and by combining expertise in IBD management with advanced colonoscopy and resection techniques, Dr Eqbal is uniquely positioned to offer comprehensive care – from disease control and early detection to minimally invasive treatment.

Dr Eqbal is also actively involved in clinical research and teaching, mentoring gastroenterology and colorectal registrars and presenting work at national and international conferences. He has published extensively on endoscopic quality, therapeutic drug monitoring in IBD, and innovative approaches to polyp management. He also holds a substantive appointment at Peninsula Health.
